Luckily for us, the world of cosmetic medicine and dermatology has seen some incredibly rapid technological advancements in recent years. Still, few have been as groundbreaking as the introduction of the Switch Pico Laser, particularly for treating pigment in those with Asian or dark skins as it’s both highly effective and most importantly – safe for this type of skin.
KEY BENEFITS OF PICO LASER
• Perfect for Asian and dark skin tones
• Safe for all skin types
• An excellent treatment for pigmentation concerns (especially post-inflammmatory hyperpigmentation)
• Effective for stubborn skin concerns like acne scars and scarring that don’t respond to traditional laser treatments.
• Highly effective for tattoo removal, and requires fewer treatments
• Minimal downtime, little to no pain
What is the Switch Pico laser?
Often called a picosecond laser, the Pico Laser is a highly advanced device that emits ultrashort pulses of energy. Unlike traditional lasers that use nanosecond (one billionth of a second) pulses, the picosecond laser operates at an incredible one trillionth of a second. This super-short pulse duration allows the laser to deliver exceptionally precise energy, minimising heat damage to surrounding tissues.
The term ‘switch’ refers to the device’s ability to target different layers of skin with varying wavelengths, making it suitable for treating a wide range of skin concerns.
Who can benefit from the Switch Pico Laser?
Pigmentation/hyperpigmentation concerns
One of this laser’s most significant benefits is its ability to treat pigmentation disorders. From melasma and age spots to freckles and sunspots, the Switch Pico Laser can greatly improve these concerns by targeting excess melanin in the skin without affecting the surrounding tissue. Consequently, patients see a more even skin tone and brighter complexion.
Tattoo removal
The Switch Pico Laser has redefined tattoo removal, giving patients faster, more effective results than traditional laser treatments. This is because its ultrashort pulses can break down tattoo ink in smaller particles, allowing for quicker removal — and with fewer sessions. What’s more, the laser’s precision minimises the risk of scarring or discolouration, making it an excellent choice for removing tattoos on sensitive areas or darker skin tones.
Skin rejuvenation, fine lines and wrinkles & ageing skin concerns
The Switch Pico Laser can cleverly stimulate collagen and elastin production, resulting in firmer, smoother and more youthful skin. It effectively treats fine lines, wrinkles, loose, crepey skin and the appearance of enlarged pores. It promotes long-term rejuvenation with minimal downtime by triggering the skin’s natural repair process.
Acne scar & scar rejuvenation
The Pico laser can effectively improve skin colour changes associated with acne scars (known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation). It can also be used to treat mildly depressed acne scars. And, as mentioned, it’s safe to use on Asian and dark skin tones, making it a welcomed device for many people who previously had limited options.
How it works
The Switch Pico Laser works through a process called ‘photoacoustic impact’. When the laser is directed at the skin, it emits ultrashort pulses of light energy. Traditionally, lasers rely on heat to break down pigmentation or stimulator collagen; however, the Pico Laser uses mechanical energy. The results? This high-intensity, rapid energy delivery shatters pigmentation into microscopic particles, which are then eliminated by the body’s immune system.
This sophisticated ability to precisely target skin layers ensures effective treatment — with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. And, as it can work at various wavelengths, it is suitable for a wide variety of skin types and concerns.
What to expect during a treatment
As always, before any cosmetic medical procedure, you’ll have a consultation with Doctor Sam, who will examine your skin, assess your skin type, listen to your concerns and determine whether the Switch Pico laser is the best choice for you. If you’re deemed suitable and are happy to proceed, you’ll be booked in for a treatment.
During your treatment: Your laser treatment typically last 10 to 15 minutes for a small area (e.g.face) or up to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. You’ll feel a mild sensational similar to tiny pinpricks, but typically, the experience is well tolerated.
After your treatment: The benefit of the Switch Pico Laser is that there is minimal downtime. And, post-treatment care is also minimal. You’ll be strictly advised to avoid direct sun exposure and always use sunscreen to protect the treated areas. You may experience some temporary redness or mild swelling, which usually subsides within a day, but apart from that, you can carry on with your life with no other side effects from your treatment.
Treatments required
The initial treatment usually requires a minimum of 2-3 sessions about 3-4 weeks apart. Once the desired effect is achieved, one-off treatments may be required at 12-18 monthly intervals to maintain results.
