Recently, we caught up with Sarah Ruocco, Cosmetic Clinician and Registered Nurse at Samara Aesthetics.
How long have you been working as a nurse?
I’ve been working at Samara Aesthetics for over three years, but I have been nursing for 20 years this year. Emergency Nursing was my speciality before cosmetics.
What attracted you to medical aesthetics?
The cosmetic industry has always been an area that interested me, but after COVID, I felt like I needed a change from the hospital environment. So, I completed some further studies (a Graduate Diploma in Cosmetic Nursing and Injectables) to help me better understand the industry. The medical aesthetics field allows me to use my nursing knowledge in combination with cosmetics and dermal therapies to tailor treatments for my patients.
What are the more common treatments you provide?
The most common treatments I perform are wrinkle-relaxing treatments, followed by laser treatments and vitamin infusions.
When do you feel your skin is at its best?
My skin is at its best when I’ve been eating well, exercising and managing stress. Throw in a good skincare routine plus a chemical peel, and I’m glowing.
What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about my job is seeing patients’ confidence grow when we address an issue that has been bothering them for a long time. It’s often not something major, just something that has made them insecure about their appearance. Assisting with these issues is what makes this job so rewarding.
What’s your favourite treatment and why?
My favourite treatments are collagen bio-stimulating injectables, which help to replace volume loss, improve skin quality and fight signs of ageing. They provide very natural-looking results, which help my patients to look ‘fresher’ without being obvious or ‘overdone’.
Favourite volumising/augmenting treatment?
I love treating lips for both definition, volume and hydration.
If you were stuck on a desert island and could only have two skincare products, what would they be?
If I were stuck on a desert island and could only have two skincare products, I would choose K-ceutic post-treatment cream as this is both hydrating and SPF 50+ to protect me from the sun, and Medik8 clarifying foam to help keep my skin clean and clear after a day in the elements.
Speaking of products, do you have any other favourites?
Medik8 Micellar mousse cleanser is excellent as the first step of a double cleanse to help remove makeup without stripping your skin.
Profhilo moisturiser is another favourite of mine for adding gentle hydration without feeling too heavy or greasy, which is great for my blemish-prone skin.
Have you had any treatments yourself this year?
I like to have a chemical peel or Hydrafacial once a month to help keep my skin fresh and clear. My skin always feels smooth and hydrated after. I’ve already had one of each this year. 🙂
What are your predictions for trending treatments in 2025?
I think collagen bio-stimulators will lead the way in the future of cosmetic injectables. New products are becoming available this year, which look promising in providing natural-looking results with minimal discomfort or downtime.
What do you love most about working at Samara Aesthetics?
Samara Aesthetics has a great collaborative environment where we support each other and strive for the best results for our patients. Having Dr Sam on hand to answer any questions we may have also makes this an excellent workplace. .
If you could give one piece of advice to your patients, what would it be?
Use SPF daily to protect your skin from premature ageing — and skin cancer!
It all starts with a consultation
with a medically trained doctor...
At Samara Aesthetics, every client starts with a one-on-one consultation with Dr Sam Avarinth, a medically trained cosmetic doctor. He’ll take the time to assess you, listen to questions, and share his knowledge before suggesting suitable, personalised treatment options. There’s no one-size-fits-all, no pushy sales talk — just caring, considered, evidence-based advice.
