‘Antiwrinkle treatments’ is the phrase we used to describe various medications and treatments used to help treat individuals with lines and wrinkles. We understand that this may sound vague; however, in Australia, the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) has set strict guidelines for advertising these. Consequently, we no longer mention brand names — or clearly describe the products we use. We understand this is frustrating for many of our patients. Still, as a medical cosmetic clinic, we are committed to adhering to these rules.

The antiwrinkle treatments used by Dr Sam at Samara Aesthetics are chemically synthesised medications that induce localised skeletal muscle paralysis. Once absorbed into the muscles, they block the action between the nerve and the muscle. This absorption into the muscle from injection typically takes 24-48 hours.

You must limit vigorous exercise and heavy methods of the treated area for up to 48 hours after treatment. (We want the product to stay still and be absorbed into the muscle. The injection points are placed precisely and deliberately to create the desired outcome. If the product moves, it may result in unwanted effects.)

There is a risk of droopiness or ptosis, which can occur when excessive stimulation or muscle blood flow occurs 24 to 48 hours after the injection. However, the most common accommodations are my localised effects, such as swelling or bruising.

Antiwrinkle treatments are relatively quick. Typically, you’ll be in and out of your appointment within 30 minutes.

After any antiwrinkle treatment, you mustn’t lie down, touch or massage the treated area for four hours. This is so you don’t accidentally spread the substance to the surrounding muscles, which could result in undesirable outcomes.
