At Samara Aesthetics, we use the Pico Enlighten laser, one of the most advanced, industry-leading lasers for tattoo removal. A highly sophisticated tool, it allows for fast, safe and effective tattoo removal— even those resistant to traditional treatments. It also requires little to no downtime and fewer treatments than conventional lasers.
Tattoos are comprised of multiple colours, which require multiple wavelengths to remove them effectively. Pico Enlighten uses three wavelengths and dual pulse durations to effectively remove your unwanted tattoo without harming surrounding tissues, requiring fewer sessions than previous laser treatments.
The Pico Enlighten laser operates at high speed with advanced precision. Consequently, it can remove tattoos quickly with fewer treatments and less discomfort.
During your treatment, the Pico laser is applied to the area using a handheld device. You’ll experience sensations similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. During this time, the laser will emit ultrashort pulses of energy that shatter the ink particles in the tattoo into tiny fragments. These fragments are then naturally absorbed and eliminated by the body’s immune system.
Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes.
Our Pico Enlighten laser is effective on a wide range of tattoo colours, including black, blue, green and red. However, some colours are easier to remove than others. For example, black is the easiest to remove, while green is the hardest and may require more sessions.
Several factors are considered when determining how many sessions you need to remove your tattoo. These include:
• Ink type
• Size of the tattoo
• Location of the tattoo
• Age of the tattoo
• Tattoo colour
• Scarring in the area
• Density of the ink
• Lifestyle habits and personal immunity
• Amateur versus professional tattoos
PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS
• No tanning beds, sun exposure or sunless tanning cream for four weeks before your treatment. Sun exposure decreases the effectiveness of the laser treatment and can increase the chance of post-treatment complications.
• Use a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher. Apply to the treated area every two hours.
Avoid the use of active serums and products such as Vitamin A for 2 weeks before treatment.
• Remove all make-up, creams or oils before your treatment.
POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS
• After cleansing, while the skin is still moist, apply a thin layer of Cetaphil, Dermeze or QV ointment to the treated tattoo.
• Apply a nonstick pad over the tattoo until it is healed.
• Strictly avoid sun exposure to the treated area. Use a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher. Apply to the treated area every two hours when exposed to the sun. Making this a part of your permanent skincare routine is recommended.
• Clean the area daily with mild soap and water and pat dry.
• Do not rub or scratch the area. Relieve any discomfort by using cool gel packs or paracetamol.
• If blistering occurs, keep the area moist by applying Cetaphil, Dermeze or QV ointment three times a day — or antibiotic ointment as recommended by your doctor. Avoid swimming pools or hot tubs until treated areas heal.

Laser tattoo removal works by breaking down tattooed pigment particles beneath the skin. These particles are broken into smaller pieces that can be eliminated by the lymphatic system. Currently, the ink particles in your tattoo are large and, hence, cannot be removed by your lymphatic system. This is why tattoos are permanent.
During your treatment, the laser shatters the ink into tiny particles, allowing your macrophages (a type of white blood cell) to absorb and remove the particles. After each session, it may take weeks for the shattered ink particles to be flushed from your body. Each treatment will target the next layer of pigment until your tattoo is removed.
Complete removal of all types of tattoos cannot be 100% guaranteed. Several factors will influence successful tattoo removal, including the colour of the ink. Some ink colours are more challenging to remove than others. Ironically, darker colours are easier to remove, while pale colours such as yellow can be more resistant.
Yes. Older tattoos are typically easier to remove as the breakdown of ink over time makes it more susceptible to removal.
New tattoos can be removed; however, waiting at least six weeks is recommended as this allows time for your body to heal — and will help avoid damage to the skin. Then, you can commence laser tattoo removal.
We recommend waiting eight weeks between treatments to allow your body to heal adequately.
It’s rare to get a scar after laser tattoo removal. The laser light works by targeting and breaking down ink particles beneath the skin, which are then naturally flushed away by your lymphatic system. It differs from the Tatooine process, where the needle punctures the skin. Therefore, there is far less chance of scarring because there is no puncture. However, you must strictly follow your doctor’s after-care instructions.
Laser tattoo removal can be a little uncomfortable and is often likened to the feeling of being flicked with a hot elastic band. However, at Samara Aesthetics, we take extra care to avoid pain. You’ll be given prescription strength numbing cream. We’ll also use cooling machines to help avoid any burning sensations during the process. Also, your session will be fairly quick, so that any pain will be short-lived.
The number of treatments required to remove your tattoo depends on several factors, including the size, colours and age of the tattoo. Generally speaking, smaller, darker tattoos will require fewer sessions (e.g. 6 to 8), while newer tattoos with lighter shades may require more sessions (e.g. 8 to 12)
Avoid picking or scratching the treated area until it is 100% healed. Do not touch any blisters, as this will increase the potential for infection and scarring. Be gentle when washing (never spray water onto the treated area), and avoid using soaps with scents or perfumes.
