Around 20% of adults experience visible or damaged veins. Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure used to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. It may also assist with symptoms such as itching, cramping, discolouration, or mild discomfort.
A prescribed solution is injected into the targeted vein, causing the vessel walls to collapse and close off. Over time, the treated vein is gradually broken down and naturally reabsorbed by the body. This process can result in clearer-looking skin and improved circulation. In some cases, sclerotherapy may be combined with vascular laser treatments for enhanced outcomes.
All patients begin with a consultation with a qualified medical professional. During this session, we review your medical history, assess your veins, and discuss your treatment goals. Sclerotherapy is most often used for visible veins in the legs and thighs, but can also be applied to smaller spider veins that may appear on the sides of the nose or feet.
Visible improvement often begins after the first treatment.
A follow-up is usually scheduled 3 weeks after your procedure.
Sessions are commonly repeated every 5–6 weeks.
Most veins require 2–3 sessions, while more resistant veins may need additional treatments.
Results can last for several years, though recurrence of new veins is possible over time.
All medical procedures carry risks. With sclerotherapy, complications are rare but may include brown skin staining, infection, or ulceration around injection sites. Proper compression of the treated area for at least two weeks is important to support healing and minimise risk.
