What are Wrinkle Relaxers?
No matter how well we look after our face, with cleansing and moisturising routines, reduced levels of collagen and elastin will cause fine lines and wrinkles as we age. Wrinkle relaxers are minimally invasive and target specific areas to reduce the signs of ageing.
The common areas where wrinkle relaxers are most effective are:
- frown lines – number 11’s
- forehead lines – horizontal lines on the forehead
- crow’s feet – lines around the eyes
However, wrinkle relaxers can also be used to treat:
- lip flip – the lines around the lip
- gummy smile – showing too much of the gum line when smiling
- jawline slimming
The area to be injected is cleaned thoroughly with antiseptic and following the application of anaesthetic numbing agents, the muscle is injected with the medication.
The results can be easily seen within the following few days of the procedure and generally last for up to 5 months.
The wrinkle relaxers used by Dr Sam at Samara medical and cosmetic clinics are chemically synthesised medications that induce localised skeletal muscle paralysis. Once they are absorbed into the muscles they then cause a blockage between the action of the nerve and the muscle itself. This absorption into the muscle from injection takes typically 24-48 hours.
It is essential to limit vigorous exercise and heavy massage of the treated area for up to 48 hours after treatment. You don’t want the product to move while it is being absorbed into the muscle.
The injection points are placed precisely and deliberately to create the outcome you desire and if the product moves it may result in unwanted effects.
A risk of droopiness or ptosis occurs when there is excessive stimulation of blood flow in the muscles in the 24-48 hours after the injection.
However, the most common complications are minor localised effects such as swelling or bruising.
